Protecting Your Home’s Roof from Storm Damage

Without a roof, your house would not be home. A roof provides shelter, security, and protection from all outside elements. When your roof becomes damaged from those outside elements, like a tree falling on it during a storm or large hail puncturing through it, it’s important to seek professional help right away to prevent any further damage. But who do you call when something like this happens in the middle of the night or on the weekend? Is it considered an emergency? What are the common causes of emergency roofing repairs? Below, we will help answer these questions to provide you with knowledge, so you will know what to do if something like this happens to your roof.

What is considered an emergency?

If a roof is allowing water to enter the home, caving in, or looking like a potential hazard, then it most definitely needs to be repaired ASAP. In most instances, a roofing company in Columbia can address the issue right away with a temporary solution until the weather permits and the roofing company can map out a plan and schedule with you at the time to determine the exact issue and its costs.

What are the common causes of emergency roofing repairs?

There is a variety of things that can cause roofing emergencies. It is your job, as the homeowner, to react quickly as soon as you notice your roof’s damage. Here are the more common causes of roofing repair emergencies:

Rain- Rain, in general, should not cause any issues to your roof, but if it rains for a long period, the more it can affect your roof. For example; your roof may have an area that forms a crevice in which it will gather the rain for the total duration of the storm causing that area of the roof to weaken. If it becomes weak, the easier it is for holes and leaks.

Hailstorms – When weather conditions get severe and form into hailstorms, the hail in Columbia can cause major storm damage in a matter of minutes. You might not notice the damage during the storm, but for precautions after each hail storm, it’s best to inspect your roof to make sure the hard hail did not puncture the roof.

High winds – High winds can affect your roof because of the effects it can have on trees close to the roof. The high winds can knock over a tree into your roof and home, causing a large puncture to its form.

Who do you call?

You call a professional roofing company that provides a 24-7 emergency hotline. Do not call in a panic. The damage to the roof is already damaged. Once you call the roofing company, they will send over help to prevent issues from worsening. It’s also best to contact your insurance company to analyze what’s covered and what is not. Together, yourself and the roofing company can go over your coverage to determine a plan of action best for your roofing needs.

Types of Wood Siding Available for Homeowners

When building your home, even the smallest decision could make a world of difference in what it ultimately looks like. This is also true when undertaking an exterior redesign project. Siding, among other key characteristics, is one of those big decisions that could entirely alter your home’s exterior appeal based on your decision.
Although plastic siding has become a popular option in recent years due to pricing, traditional wood siding remains the preference for many homeowners. This is because wood siding offers customers numerous benefits over their plastic counterparts. Benefits include:

• Wood siding is eco-friendlier than plastic

• Wood is more aesthetically appealing

• Many types of wood are naturally resistant to mold, mildew, and rot, which allows the home owner less maintenance

• Wood lasts longer

• …And much more

One of the main benefits is that wood naturally takes to paint, stains, and other decorative options incredibly well. Plastic, on the other hand, often must be crafted in the customer’s color choice – meaning that options are limited. Once decided upon a type of wood siding, however, you can then choose any type of finish. Whether you want to paint your home the colors of the rainbow, or opt for a natural dark wood stain, anything is possible. Below we look at four of the most commonly used types of siding available: board and batten siding, bevel, tongue and groove, and lap siding. Each has their own aesthetic appeal so that there is something for every person’s unique tastes.

Board and Batten Siding

Board and batten siding is a vertical design created by using two different sized boards. The wider boards are set beneath, while the narrower boards are placed atop the joins. These narrower boards are called ‘battens.’ There are no set widths, so homeowners can choose their preference. The most commonly used measurements, however, are 1 inch by 3 inch battens placed over 1 inch by 10 inch boards.

Bevel Siding

Bevel siding is the most commonly used siding. Installed horizontally, boards are cut at an angle so that one side is thicker than the others. This creates a shingle effect, or the appearance that the boards are overlapping one another. Tongue and Groove Siding Tongue and groove siding is incredibly versatile. Available in both rough and smooth board finishes, it is fitted together tightly to give a sleek appearance. It can be installed in any direction, which does not only include horizontal and vertical, but also diagonal.

Lap Siding

Lap Siding is also known as Channel siding. This siding is very versatile, with installation capabilities for any direction (like the above tongue and groove siding). This unique siding features boards which partially overlap one another, and the ultimate results are a rustic appearance like those of a hunting cabin. If you’re interested in learning even more about wood siding -including less commonly used types available – you can contact your local siding specialist or construction expert. They will be able to give you more detailed information, including a price estimate for your area.

NBA Playoff Odds, Preview, and Predictions for April 27, 2018

After epic performances by LeBron James and Russell Westbrook in Game 5 of their respective best-of-seven first-round series, their teams enter April 27th with different goals in mind.

LeBron James’ spectacular game-saving block and game-winning three-pointer on Wednesday gave the Cleveland Cavaliers their first lead of their first-round series at 3-2. The Cavs hope to get an encore from King James on Friday as they try to eliminate the Indiana Pacers in Indiana.

While Cleveland is trying to move on to the next round, the Oklahoma City Thunder are looking to equalize their own best-of-seven first-round series against the Utah Jazz. The Thunder are riding high on Russell Westbrook’s 45-point effort during their Game 5 victory where they overcame a 25-point third-quarter deficit.

Here are the odds, previews, and our predictions for the NBA Playoff games on April 27, 2018.

Cavs at Pacers – Game 6
Cavs +105, Pacers -125)

LeBron James was simply breathtaking in Game 5, doing everything on the court for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Another monster night for the King, another victory for his Cavs. Really, Cleveland’s success in this series isn’t hard to decode. It’s just two words: King James.

James has scored at least 32 points in his team’s three victories, averaging 40.67 points per game in those games. Meanwhile, he’s averaged just 26 points per game in Cleveland’s two losses to Indiana this series. Save for Game 1, James’ FG attempts have almost been the same in the last four games. The only difference is that he’s shot above 54.5% during victories but not more than 45.5%.

Victor Oladipo’s playoff average is 3 points off his regular-season scoring average. That’s not too bad. But what is worrying is that Oladipo’s point output has steadily decreased from game to game: 32 to 22 to 18 to 17 to 12. Like James in Cleveland, Indiana’s regular-season success was because of Oladipo flourishing in their offense. If they want to see a Game 7, Oladipo has to pick up the pace. It’s now or never for the Pacers.

Both teams have won once each in the other team’s home court, so that won’t be too much of a factor in Game 6, as it hasn’t been all series long. Save for the Game 1 blowout, the average winning margin in this series (Games 2-5) has only been just four points, with Games 2, 3, and 5 decided by just one possession.

The Cavs and LeBron have the momentum here, but given how close the series has been despite LeBron’s superhuman effort, the Pacers aren’t goners yet. He may be the best today, but you can’t expect LeBron to put up the same numbers in Game 6 (or else he’s Superman). Meanwhile, Oladipo is due for an explosion after three straight off nights, and yes, Cleveland is winless in Indiana in four tries dating back to the regular season.
